Top Windsurfing Locations – Midwest United States

Pictures from the MidwestSometimes the best windsurfing locations can be those that are right outside your back door.  The Discover Windsurfing blog initially set out to make a list of the Top Locations for Windsurfing from across the globe but we now set our sights on more local wind surfing locations.  Next up on our list of the best windsurf is the Midwest United States.  Sure you can find amazing windsurfing spots on the East and West coast of the US but how about overlooked center of the country.  Whether it’s Michigan, Ohio, or  Minnesota there are plenty of windsurfing locations scattered throughout the Mid West.

Usually in our blog posts about the top windsurfing locations we use this section to tell a little bit about the climate of the location we’re highlighting but this time we’re doing things a little different.  The Mid West is unlike many of the other hot spots we’ve spoken about due to the fact that it has very distinct seasons and prime windsurfing weather is mixed between Spring and Summer.  But the large number of lakes scattered through out the region make finding a great spot quite easy to do and websites like  MoWind.com serve to highlight specific lakes that stand out from the rest for windsurfing.  A few of the top locations for windsurfing from around the Midwest are Traverse City, MI, near Cleveland, OH,  Chicago, IL, and St. Paul, Minnesota.  Next time you’re looking for a great windsurfing vacation spot why not check out someplace lesser known and closer to home, you just might find your own little peace of windsurf heaven.

Top Windsurfing Locations – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Picture of Rio de JaneiroFinding the best locations across the world for the water sports of your choice, whether surfing, windsurfing or stand-up paddle boarding, can be a difficult task to undertake.  We aim to build this list of the Top Locations for Stand-Up Paddleboarding that will allow anyone, whether you’re an expert or a beginner to make it easier to pick a location that suits your needs.  Our next SUP Boarding and stand up paddlesurfing location to highlight is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  There are dozens of locations throughout Brazil that are widely respected as windsurfing hubs the world over but few can hold a candle to the beauty that Brazil’s captiol cit holds within its borders.

Rio has a tropical savanna climate and is often characterized by long periods of rain from December to March. The temperature occasionally reaches over 40 °C (104 °F) in inland areas of the city, and maximum temperatures above 28 °C (82 °F) occur on a monthly basis. In the main tourist areas (south side, where the beaches are located), the temperature is moderated by the cool sea-breezes from the Atlantic Ocean.  Along the coast, the breeze, blowing alternately onshore and offshore, modifies the temperature which also makes for almost perfect conditions for windsurfing.  The temperature varies according to elevation, distance from the coast, and type of vegetation. Winter brings mild temperatures and less rain than in the summer.

Top Windsurfing Locations – Hawaii

Hawaii is one of the most picturesque places in all the world and the United States is lucky to call this almost perfect windsurfing paradise part of our 50 states. The string of volcanic islands that make up the state of Hawaii is the home of dozens of great windsurf locations like Kailua Beach, Oahu and Kannapali Beach,Maui. Below you will have the average climate of Hawaii throughout the year as well as other information about this fantastic windsurfing destination.

Hawaii’s climate is typical for the tropics, although temperatures and humidity tend to be a bit less extreme due to near-constant trade winds from the east. Summer highs are usually in the upper 80s °F, (around 31°C) during the day and mid 70s, (around 24 °C) at night. Winter day temperatures are usually in the low to mid 80s, (around 28 °C) and (at low elevation) seldom dipping below the mid 60s (18 °C) at night. Snow, not usually associated with tropics, falls at 4,205 metres (13,796 ft) on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island in some winter months. Snow rarely falls on Haleakala. Mount Waiʻaleʻale, on Kauaʻi, has the second highest average annual rainfall on Earth, about 460 inches (11.7 m). Most of Hawaiʻi has only two seasons: the dry season from May to October, and the wet season from October to April. (Information pulled from Wikipedia)
